Milo Kamalani is one of the main characters of the show, and is best friends with Pepper Ann and Nicky.
Personality[]
Milo has his own perspective on life. Sometimes he's philosophical, sometimes he's artistic, and sometimes he's just plain weird, but either way, he's still a good friend to Pepper Ann and Nicky. He's always around, and he's always willing to offer an opinion on what people say.
Milo's biggest hobby is his art (to quote him, "Art is life! Without art, comic books would be but brief novels!" ["Radio Freak Hazelnut"]). Like most artists, he feels that his work is misunderstood, though it's pretty easy for us to know why people can't fathom the meaning of giant squirrels attacking a city, or a very depressing ghost trying to capture the theme "shiny, happy future" on the school yearbook cover. But Milo sticks to it, pursuing his muse for the mere enjoyment of it.
Some of the things Milo is most famous for in Hazelnut is being the Crunch Pod champ (4 years running, according to "Crunch Pod"), painting a couple of murals, and mowing the lawns of various people in interesting artistic patterns.
But Milo can do more than just art. He often tries to talk Pepper Ann out of one of her schemes, before she does something she'll regret. She rarely listens to his advice, but it doesn't discourage him from trying.
Appearance[]
Milo is a Pacific Islander preteen (like Pepper Ann and Nicky, he is 12 years old) with black hair (which reflects as a bold blue), which he wears a fuzzy, purple hat on. Said hat contains a three-color pattern on its rim - green, orange, and yellow. He wears a baggy T-shirt that is colored orange on one side, and yellow on the other; its collar is similarly split, with parallel colors f. Additionally, he wears turquoise shorts, white socks, and lime green sneakers.
Family[]
As stated in "Dances with Ignorance", Milo and his family are Native Hawaiian; tracing back, in his words, "to the Kanaka Maoli (Indigenous Hawaiian) people of the Hawaiian archipelago". Milo is a child of divorce, living with his mother, Kona Kamalani, in Hazelnut. It is implied that his father moved to Hawaii following the divorce. Milo is shown to have a jaded view of his father, as their relationship grew more distant over the years, as shown in "Thanksgiving Dad".
Sometime prior to the events of the series, Kona remarried to Dirk, a man who bowls as his main hobby. He is eager to connect with his stepson but is typically aloof to Milo's true feelings. It is likely that Milo's expertise with mowing lawns came from Dirk.
Dirk is first seen in the episode "Manly Milo", in which he attempts to give Milo advice on manhood, although his words fall on deaf ears. He is later mentioned in the episode "That's My Dad", being late to take Milo to a classic car show at the Acorn Arena (despite Milo finding them uninteresting).
Kona first appears in "The Velvet Room" (although her second appearance was aired first), in which she is shown to run a catering business. She is easygoing and friendly to Milo or visitors, but is very strict when it comes to the velvet room, chasing Pepper Ann out after setting a foot in the room; by the end of the episode, she eases up on letting the family using the room. She is also mentioned in "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Milo", drawing on her ankles after gaining a newfound sense of artistic inspiration at the grocery store.
Milo's father is exclusively seen in the episode "A Kosher Christmas", along with the rest of the Kamalani family (as well as the Pearsons and Littles).
In "The Finale", it is shown that 15 years in the future, Milo is married to a woman named Bettina, and they have a baby daughter named Zoie.
Milo's Hat[]
It is implied that Milo's hat is actually one in a long string of hats:
- In "Impractical Jokes", Milo is seen wearing his signature hat as a baby, implying that he wore it often during his youth.
- In "The Way They Were", Nicky dawned the hat during her stint as a bully, giving it to Milo as a gesture of good will after befriending him and Pepper Ann. Considering that she and Milo have had a history (with her stealing his milk money), it is unclear whether or not the hat was always hers.
- In "The Sellout", Pepper Ann and Nicky gift Milo a new hat as a present.
- In "Crunch Pod", Milo tells Pepper Ann that he found his most recent hat in the garbage.
Episode Appearances[]
Milo appears in almost every episode of the series, with the exception of:
- "The Big Pencil" (does not speak)
- "The Sisterhood" (mentioned)
- "Cold Feet"
- "Miss Moose"
- "Girl Power"
- "Sammy's Song"
- "P.A.'s Pop Fly"
Trivia[]
- In "Quiz Bowl", he says that once he forgot his own name, so he told everyone to call him Milo. This was likely a gag and not meant to be taken literally.
- In "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Milo", he returns to the "place of his first artistic inspiration". This place is in front of a freezer case stocked with fish sticks. According to him, he immediately grabbed the eyebrow pencil from his mother's purse and stated drawing on her ankles.
